Weave a Fun Shaggy Pile

This is part two, in part one  I showed you how to make fringe with rya knots.

Now I'm going to show you how to weave the knots into a shaggy pile. Later on in this post, I'll show you a fun way to make loopy pile too.

This time I doubled the yarn to make a nice thick rya knot. I also changed directions, these knots are facing up on the loom. I did this to make the yarn want to stick up rather than hanging down like fringe.

I also double the knots because two colors are fun. Don't you think so?

 

Pack the row down. 

 I don't put a rya knot on the first and last warp thread. I think it makes a neater edge. Otherwise, you'd have to wrap the weft yarn around the rya knot, and that could look messy.

 

Weave two rows of the weft yarn (mine is purple yarn) between each row of rya knots. If you're not sure how to do this refer to my last post, How to Make Rya Knots.

Keep making your pile until you've reached the pile-ness you desire. 

 

You can leave the pile with an uneven shag, or you can trim it down. I love this part, it's so exciting to think I might mess the whole thing up.

And then decide I want it that way, of course.

Now it's time to try some loops

You can use lots of different things to wrap your loops around. I use a straw because it's cute, but a wooden dowel rod, a knitting needle, or a pencil would work well too.

Weave a few rows of the weft yarn. 

Then weave one more row for the loops. After you weave the row, put the straw over the warp, and loop the weft yarn around it. You will take the yarn up between each warp thread. 

 

 

Weave two rows over the loops.

 

I wove the next row of loops by pulling the yarn up between the third warp thread, then continuing to the edge. This creates a more dense pile.
